Lata Mangeshkar: A Rare, Unparalleled Singing Legend.

The Lata Mangeshkar

Lata Mangeshkar was born on 28 September 1929. The nonagenarian living musical legend of India started her musical journey in 1942 and has spanned over seven decades. She is an Indian playback singer and music director. She is the most respected playback singer in India as well as worldwide. She has recorded songs in over a thousand Hindi films and has sung songs in over thirty-six Indian languages and foreign languages.

Family background

Lata Mangeshkar belongs to a musical family, where her father respected classical singer and theatre artist Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar has started teaching her music at an early age. By the time she was five, Lata was seen participating as an actress in plays written by her father. Her siblings – Meena, Asha, Usha, and Hridaynath – are all accomplished singers and musicians.

Notable Awards

She has always been called the ‘Nightingale of India‘, is one of the most versatile singers in the Indian film industry. She was honored with India’s highest award in cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, in 1989 by the Government of India. Besides it she has been awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor as only the second female vocalist, after M. S. Subbulakshmi, to receive this honor.

In her singing career she has been won the recipient of three National Film Awards, 15 Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards, four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards, two Filmfare Special Awards, Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award and many more. In 1974, she became the first Indian to perform at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

Musical journey of Lata Mangeshkar

She ruled almost 7decades from 1942. She has got her first break after the tragic demise of her father happend with the help of her father’s friend Vinayak.  Her first song”Naachu Yaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani Haus Bhaari” was in Marathi. Later in 1949 she moved to Bombay alongwith her career she began learning Hindustani music from Ustad Aman Ali Khan. She has worked with many legendary music directors including Madan Mohan, R D Burman, the duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal and A R Rahman.

Mangeshkar sang duets with Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, Mohammed RafiKishore Kumar, Mukesh, Talat Mahmood, Manna Dey, Hemant Kumar,  Nitin Mukesh, Amit Kumar,  Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu and Sonu Nigam

We are very much fortunate to have the immortal voice in our country. Lata Mangeshkar is the owner of the golden voice created so many perpetual numbers.
