The Life And Times Of Jagjit Singh: A Tribute.

The legendary gazal singer Jagjit Singh was born on February 8, 1941, in Ganganagar located in Rajasthan. The most extraordinary singer in the ghazal genre. The Padma Bhushan awardee gazal maestro is sometimes recognized as the King of Ghazals. In the pop era, he emerged as The Ghazal King by reviving the melodious version of music.

Career & Life of Jagjit Singh

The legendary gazal singer Jagjit Singh was born on February 8, 1941, in Ganganagar located in Rajasthan began his professional career in 1961 by undertaking singing and composing assignments at All India Radio Jallandhar station. He started composing He sang his first Gujarati song in 1968. The next break he got in Suresh Amin’s film Bahuroopi and composer Ajit Merchant gave Jagjit Singh this first break in 1969. In Bollywood, he sang the ghazal from the 1982 film Arth sung by Jagjit Singh. The most extraordinary singer in the ghazal genre.

Beyond Time, was the first digitally recorded release in India, in 1987 by Jagjit Singh. The Unforgettable was his first LP album with his wife Chitra Singh. The song “Baat Niklegi” from the album achieved a nice acclamation for the Singhs. It was the first time Western Instruments were used in Ghazals. Later the couple singing stars in the Nineteen Seventies were Shiv Kumar Batalvi – Birha da Sultan in 1978, live in Concert at Wembley in 1979, and come Alive in 1979. They also composed the background scores for Famous TV Serials like “Mirza Ghalib” & “Kahkashan”.

His iconic songs from another Mahesh Bhatt film Arth – ‘Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar’ and ‘Tum Jo Itna Muskra Rahe Ho’  are the most popular to date. With legendary Lata Mangeshkar, the gazal album “Sajda” was a hit and sold innumerable copies.

During five decades of his musical career, he did uncounted musical magic to get remembered till now. He suffered a brain hemorrhage on 23 September 2011, was in a coma for over two weeks, and died on 10 October at Lilavati Hospital, in Mumbai. But he will be alive in his songs forever.
