On 1st May 1919 the music maestro took birth in Calcutta. Prabodh Chandra Dey ,who named as Manna Dey was a legendary personality in Indian Music . He did his schooling from Scottish Church Collegiate School& pre university from Scottish Church College. In music he took interest & highly inspired by his own paternal uncle Sangeetacharya Krishna Chandra Dey.
He did graduation from Vidyasagar College.His early guruji of Music was his Uncle Krishna Chandra Dey, later on Ustad Dabir Khan. After starting career in Music ,he had never left learning Indian Classical Music in Bombay he was taken classical lessons from Ustad Aman Ali Khan & Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan.
He owned an unique style of combining classical music with movie songs. He has been one of the best playback singer of India like other legends Kishore Kumar, Mohammad Rafi .With the film Tamanna in 1942 he started his playback singing career, which followed by many successes like Mera Naam Joker(1970) & Sohlay(1975) & so on. Uncountable golden memorable songs brought him many awards. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1971, the Padma Bhusan in 2005 & the DadaShaheb Phalke award in 2007 by Government of India. Other accolades are innumerable.
