As Musicians, Producers, Audio Engineers you should know about the basic different between Sampler , synthesizer . During music porduction If you grab a synth instead of a sampler, the output result may give you the ugly sound. Below we are discussing about the relation or differentiation between Synthesizer, Sequencer and Sampler. First you will get brief introduction of the three.
Sequencer – Sequencer may be software or hardware components that generates MIDI signals and sequences MIDI data. It drives the performance of a sample. Cakewalk is a sequencer.
Synthesizer – Synthesizer are both software or hardware engine that generates some appropriate sounds and give input as MIDI signals. This is actually a set of raw sound waves of various instruments with pitches which played with various musical effects to match the signals being received.
Sampler – Sampler are also both software or hardware which are special type of sequencer. It a samples which can be “looped” to create the illusion of a long, smoothly flowing piece of music. Software samplers store sample in system, as reuse sample sets. Some synthesizer, sampler, and sequencer modules don’t include a keyboard, and are activated via MIDI. Sampler can store many sample sound clips for different notes on different instruments.
Samplers can be create for different types of sound clip that aren’t necessarily recreations of traditional instruments. It’s also possible to assign whatever sound clip file that you want to the notes on the keyboard. Even you can create own set of sound bank, or purchase additional sound libraries and install them.
The difference between synthesizer and sampler becomes very thin or irrelevant, as samplers usually include synthesizer circuitry to further modify their samples with filters, envelopes etc.
